While vacationing in the Philippines, the 2022 Pacific Mini Games gold medalist had the privilege of competing in the weightlifting competition thanks to his coach of nearly five years, Julius Naranjo from Guam, who signed him up. at the event.

San Nicolas competed in the 102kg class and recorded a 121kg Snatch and a 161kg Clean & Jerk to clinch the silver medal.

“It was very competitive as this competition pitted the best from every city and province in the Philippines who want to make their national team,” San Nicolas told Variety.

“I think I’ve prepared long enough for an opportunity like this,” said San Nicolas, who won two golds and a silver at the CNMI Pacific Mini-Games in June.

San Nicolas’ mother is from Zamboanga in the southern Philippines, which qualified him to compete in the Asian country.

San Nicolas said he traveled to the Philippines because he was invited to Hidilyn Diaz and Julius Naranjo’s wedding.

A weightlifter from Zamboanga, Diaz is the first Filipino to win a gold medal at the Olympics.

“Being with Hidilyn and Coach Julius gave me insight into what it takes to go far in the sport,” San Nicolas said. “If you do it for the money, you’re not going anywhere, because you don’t make money from weightlifting. It’s just passion and hard work.
