Emily McKee and Zach Smith go wire to wire winning Junior Tour championship titles

Windsor, ON – Emily McKee and Zach Smith have decided that no one else will hold the lead in this week’s Junior Tour Championship of the 2022 Ontario Provincial Super Camp presented by Foresight Sports at Ambassador Golf Club. The two led the third annual wire-to-wire tournament to win convincingly, McKee on the girls’ side by three strokes and Smith by nine strokes in the boys’ division. High winds blowing at over 40 km/h throughout the day couldn’t slow either champion as they both claimed their respective titles.

Zach Smith (Brampton Golf Club), a member of Team Ontario, once again dominated the men’s game with a nice round of pars (71), including four birdies. Smith almost made an incredible eagle on 13 that would come off the fairway. Graydon Laughlin (Ottawa Hunt & Golf Club) shot a 2-over (73) to win the silver medal. Avery Mahoney (Hamilton Golf & Country Club) and Marshall Bath (Oshawa Golf & Curling Club) would shoot identical rounds of 74 to finish tied for third place and earn bronze medals. “The highlight of the week was my hole-in-one on Wednesday, then I birdied the fairway on the next hole, that doesn’t happen often,” an ecstatic Smith said after his round.

Emily McKee (St. George’s Golf & Country Club) shot her third straight regular round, an even par 71, to close things out on a charge from Shauna Liu (Station Creek Golf Club). Him shot the girls’ low round of the week, a brilliant 2-under (69) that included back-to-back birdies on 6.7 and 8 to win the silver medal. Kelly Zhao, also of Station Creek Golf Club, would get the bronze medal after a 3-over (74) final round. McKee remarked, “It was great fun and a well organized tournament, I love Ambassador Golf Club, it was a great experience and I had a lot of fun.”

Competitors from Ontario’s annual Provincial Super Camp and Tour Championship will be looking to win the Dave Mills Trophy tomorrow. The award, first presented in 2021, was named in honor of Mills, former General Manager of Golf Ontario and avid supporter and advocate of junior golf, who presented the first-ever Tour Championship trophy in 2020. The soapstone trophy was carved by Canada’s foremost Ojibway carver Kris Nahrgang, who may have met Mills before his death. He sent this message to describe his work. “While we all try to be successful in a sport we love, some people make sure we are recognized for the accomplishments we achieve. Dave Mills was that man. His work in our sport was dependable and done with a maturity and a class that made you feel important the moment you met it. In my native culture, we are presented with an eagle feather when we gain recognition. In this tribute piece, I created a visual of an eagle feather presented by the hand of this great man. The Eagle is a messenger, and it flies between the real world and the spiritual world and converses with the Creator to ensure that we, as people, be well. This coin is to recognize the man and the Spirit of this honor you have received on this day. His love for this sport and his goal to offer support to your efforts will never be forgotten. He will now be here in Spirit to present to you this honor of your achievement. Congratulations today and in the future!
