Liverpool: Jurgen Klopp says Man City lead in Premier League title race is his ‘smallest problem’

Jurgen Klopp insists catching Manchester City in the Premier League title race is his SMALLEST problem as Liverpool boss at the moment despite Pep Guardiola’s men nine points clear at the top

  • Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp says he’s not thinking about Manchester City
  • Klopp’s side are currently nine points behind the Premier League leaders
  • The German insisted that Liverpool should only focus on winning matches

Jurgen Klopp insists he’s wasting no time thinking about catching Manchester City as he has ‘a lot of problems’ to solve at Liverpool first.

Klopp’s side are riding high at the moment and host Norwich on Saturday afternoon aiming for their eighth straight win in all competitions, but they come into this latest round of fixtures nine points behind the defending champions.

That gap could potentially be reduced to six if Liverpool win their game against Leeds on Wednesday, but while working on the math of a title race distracted fans, Klopp pointed out that his mind was occupied with all sorts of problems.

The main one concerns Diogo Jota, who faces a battle to be ready for the League Cup final after injuring his ankle ligaments against Inter Milan. Liverpool’s form may be good but that hasn’t stopped their manager from worrying.

“There’s actually a lot to fix,” Klopp said. “Of all the problems I have, the smallest is what you said about City. There’s no day in the week, no minute in fact, when I think about it. We don’t have nothing to do with it, we just have to win our matches and see if we get closer or not.

“Apart from that, we are fighting for a place in the Champions League. For that, we have to win games. If we want to go further in the cup competitions or win the cup, we have to win games. It’s the same solution: you solve all your problems by winning football matches and that’s the only thing we’re talking about.

Klopp could release new signing Luis Diaz in Jota’s absence and he has added a different dynamic to Liverpool’s attack, but the German has stressed his team is not just about passing the ball well and to entertain. Without resilience, he says, there would not have been won in Milan.

‘It’s not the past when people called Real Madrid ‘Ballet Blanc’; we are not that, of course,” Klopp said.

“It’s what you do with the things you have. You have to fight and not think how good we could be. We’re not the Harlem Globetrotters. There’s a lot of really good teams and teams out there- down with which we have to fight.
