Major League Soccer and Continental Tire team up for eighth annual Kick Childhood Cancer campaign

MLS, MLS WORKS – the League’s social responsibility platform – and Continental Tire are teaming up to support Childhood Cancer Awareness Month with the 8th edition of “Kickstarter against childhood cancer ” pediatric cancer awareness campaign and fundraising for childhood cancer research.

The Kickstarter against childhood cancer The campaign will promote and benefit the Children’s Oncology Group (COG), the world’s largest organization dedicated exclusively to childhood and adolescent cancer research, bringing together more than 10,000 cancer experts in the child in more than 200 major children’s hospitals around the world. The Kickstarter against childhood cancer enabled COG to strengthen research efforts across the spectrum of pediatric cancers, including Project: EveryChild – a unique project aimed at capturing the biological data and outcomes of every child diagnosed with cancer.

The cost of a single enrollment in a clinical trial such as Project: EveryChild can approach $ 10,000 per patient. According to COG, the MLS Kickstarter against childhood cancer has offset the costs of more than 33,000 clinical trial registrations to date, of which 40,000 are expected to be registered by the end of 2021.

“As one of the most vulnerable populations affected by the ongoing pandemic, our continued support for research and clinical trials from the Children Oncology Group is more crucial than ever in the fight against childhood cancer,” said JoAnn Neale, President and Chief Executive Officer, MLS. “MLS is proud to partner with Continental Tire and league-wide MLS clubs to provide comfort and support to pediatric cancer patients and their families as part of the 8th annual Kickstarter against childhood cancer campaign.”

As part of this year’s campaign, MLS clubs created personalized pajama bottoms to distribute to pediatric cancer patients as a token of comfort as they continue their journey in the fight against cancer. Continental Tire will also amplify campaign efforts with an inspirational Kick Childhood Cancer video series hosted by MLS player and childhood cancer survivor Matt Lampson. The series will feature inspiring stories from current and former patients, families, doctors, caregivers and community members who have helped children on the road to recovery.

Fans are encouraged to support the Kick Childhood Cancer campaign by tweeting inspirational posts with the hashtag #KickChildhoodCancer during the month of September. For each post containing the hashtag #KickChildhoodCancer on Twitter from September 1 to 30, 2021, Continental Tire will donate $ 1 (up to a maximum of $ 50,000) to COG.

“We are proud to partner with MLS WORKS for the Kick Childhood Cancer campaign for a second year,” said Travis Roffler, Director of Marketing, Continental Tire. “Thanks to last year’s partnership, we were not only able to raise awareness, but also contribute significant funds through Kickstarter against childhood cancer to help strengthen the research efforts of the Children’s Oncology Group. Our hope is that we can make an even bigger impact this year for children and their families in the United States and Canada who are affected by childhood cancer.

MLS and Continental Tire will partner with MLS Clubs to “surprise and delight” pediatric cancer patients and healthcare providers with unique experiences and acts of kindness throughout September. Messages of hope generated by players, coaches and staff will be used to produce personalized blankets that will be distributed over the holidays to provide comfort to patients during treatments and hospital stays.

Throughout September, MLS, its member clubs and players will promote the campaign through stadium activations, league social and digital channels, and national and regional broadcasts. Underlined by the internationally recognized gold color for childhood cancer, MLS Kickstarter against childhood cancer matches will include:

  • An official MLS edition adidas Nativo 21 Kick Childhood Cancer match ball used in match play
