The NFL has implemented policy changes to the Rooney Rule aimed at further improving diversity, fairness and inclusion in hiring practices.

The rule has been broadened to require teams to interview at least two external minority candidates for the positions of general / executive director of football operations and all coordinator roles. Previously, the requirement was to interview a minority candidate from outside a team for openings in these positions.

Head coach positions were already covered by these requirements.

NFL clubs are now required to conduct an in-person interview for at least one external minority candidate for any head coach or general manager opening. All candidate Coordinators and Deputy Directors General can be interviewed virtually, but face-to-face interviews are encouraged.

“It’s about how to make sure the pipeline is strong with minority coaches, and overall. Making sure everyone has an opportunity, a look,” said Jonathan Beane, vice president senior and head of diversity and inclusion for the NFL.

“When you have a diverse roster and you have more than one minority or diverse candidate… the chances of a diverse candidate being interviewed increase exponentially. Beane stressed the importance of feedback after such interviews, regardless of the candidate.

“One of the things the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee recommended and adopted is the issue of feedback,” he explains. “We don’t require feedback, but we strongly encourage all clubs to do so. Someone who is interviewed for a position but doesn’t get it, it is important for them to have that feedback. information for the next opportunity he has. “

The maintenance mechanisms for candidates for the leadership of training have also been changed. Teams will be allowed to interview for such a position during the last two weeks of the regular season with the consent of the employing club – as long as the head coach position is vacant. These interviews can be done virtually.

Of course, there are no restrictions on applicants who are not employed by any NFL team.

The NFL is also creating additional education and training sessions on sexual harassment, discrimination and diversity, equity and inclusion as a result of the workplace irregularities investigation with the team. Washington Football League.
