Newcastle submit plans to significantly improve Benton training ground

Newcastle United have submitted ambitious plans to North Tyneside Council to upgrade their Benton training ground after admitting their current facilities “fall significantly below Premier League and possibly even Championship standards”.

The development application outlines proposals to introduce hydrotherapy and diving pools for the first time, as well as expanding the dining area, adding an outdoor dining area and creating a players’ lounge. The lack of recreational facilities for players is seen as a glaring omission from the current venue – leaving little room for teammates to bond and get to know each other – and was one of the main reasons Howe pushed for a mid-season trip to Saudi Arabia.

Crawley Town are set to part ways with manager John Yems.

Yems, 62, was initially suspended by the Ligue 2 club after being accused of using discriminatory language towards his players.

Crawley said they took the allegations “seriously” when they suspended Yems on April 23. Since then, Lewis Young has acted as acting director.

Gerrard: ‘Villa haven’t been successful this season’

He said: “We want to end at a place where we can be satisfied – I don’t think we’re going to be happy or celebrate anything this season because the team, from the start of the season until now, underperformed.

“In the remaining games it’s about putting ourselves in a place that we can go and build on.

“We can try to strengthen in the coming window, have a positive pre-season and reset everything for a brand new season. Those are the short-term priorities.”

‘Good luck’ Callum Wilson returns to Newcastle this weekend

Eddie Howe thinks there’s a good chance Callum Wilson will return to action for Newcastle this weekend.

Wilson said in a podcast on Thursday that he was “fully charged” after being out for four months.

The striker suffered a calf injury against Manchester United in December and has been out since that draw.

But Howe is convinced he could play a part in the game against Manchester City on Sunday.

Rodrygo confident he will score in Champions League final

The Real Madrid striker scored twice late against Manchester City in the Champions League semi-final second leg to send the game into extra time. His team then qualified to face Liverpool in the final.

He said: “I made a bet with my dad that I would score three goals and, well, I only scored two.

“I’m missing one, I’ll get it in the final.

“With this jersey, anything can happen, we fight until the end. The truth is that I have no words to describe what happened. We were almost dead. God helped me.

“It was one of the best days of my life, professionally. Being able to come in and change the game, score two goals. I’m happy. It was another magical night at the Bernabeu, as always. The crowd always helps us, in an inexplicable way.”

Mourinho on Roma reaching the Europa Conference League final

An emotional José Mourinho claimed that Roma reaching the Europa Conference League final was like their Champions League.

Tammy Abraham scored in the first half on Thursday night to give Roma a 1-0 win over Leicester City and a 2-1 win on aggregate. The Italian team will face Feyenoord in the inaugural Conference League final on May 25, which will take place in Tirana, Albania.

Mourinho suggested he was in tears after the game because of what it meant for the club, rather than himself.

Salah on a possible quadruple

Mohamed Salah thinks it’s possible for Liverpool to win an unprecedented treble this season.

The Egyptian won the Footballer of the Year award at the Football Writers’ Association dinner on Thursday night. It was the second time he had lifted the trophy, having also lifted it in 2017-18.

Salah and Liverpool are still in contention for the Champions League, Premier League and FA Cup – where they will face Chelsea in the final – as they won the Carabao Cup earlier this season.
