The promoters of “Slap Fight” announced on Saturday that the combat sport will debut in Nigeria in October.
Abdullrahman Orosanya, executive director of Slap Fight Nigeria promoter TKK Sport, who revealed this in a statement in Lagos but said the date has not yet been chosen.
He said plans were on top for the inaugural championship slated for Lagos in October, while the title fight will be held in December, also in Lagos.
Mr. Orosanya explained that slapping fighting is a sport newly introduced in Nigeria, but has been modernized in Russia and gained popularity in the United States and some European countries.
âSlap Fighting is a combat sport, or at least a self-proclaimed combat sport.
âThe origins of Slap Fighting are rather hazy, but the concept itself is a long-standing practice and has had its place in popular media.
âSlap Fight competitive style tournaments are much more modern. The era of modern popularity of Slap Fighting was ushered in by the 2010 Russian tournaments which pitted competitors against each other in competition.
âCurrently the championship is held in the United States, Great Britain, Poland, Russia and South Africa with Nigeria being the new bride.
“Plans are on track for the inaugural championship held in Lagos State in October, while the title fight is scheduled for December, also in Lagos,” he said.
Mr Orosanya said the competition will be divided into four categories: middleweight, lightweight, heavyweight and super heavyweight.
âThe rules of the competition are simple. The fighters compete on the principles of the knockout phase.
âTwo men stand face to face and take turns slapping each other with their bare hands without head protection, the competitors take turns slapping their face on the cheek with their open hands.
âThe victory is decided by knockout or by the verdict of a judge,â he said.
Mr. Orosanya added that: âOne of the main rules is that only the upper part of the palm can be used to strike the cheek only, without touching the opponent’s jaw, temple or ear.
âThe Championship is open to all athletes, world-class competitors, top influencers and loud-talking rivals give and take their best shot to fix things and win the hard way.
âThere will be virtual training for athletes and officials before the championship to build participants’ skills on the rules, modern fighting techniques and other new developments in the sport of Slap Fight.

âThe resource team will be led by JT Tilley of the Slap Fight Championship, supported by coaches, instructors and athletes from Slap Fight and the World Slap Fight Alliance,â he said.
