BASKETBALL: The Boomers are in the semi-finals against Team USA
The Boomers’ defense kept them in the game with a rambling offensive start, and they asserted their dominance in the third before blowing up the game with that 19-0 streak to start the fourth quarter and a 37- advantage. 11 in the last window. It ended in a 97-59 win which reflected the game pretty well to be fair, especially the second half.
I would have liked to see a little more quarterback fighting from the Argentines because it’s a sad way for 2004 gold medalist Luis Scola to end his Olympic career. He received a standing ovation from the crowd, both teams and even the officials, which was nice to see.
A brutally tough semi-final game looms with the United States, but we have always known America’s path to Olympic glory lies. And if Australia had a chance to beat them in a major tournament, now is.
All the baby boomers who played tonight have been put on the scoreboard, which should give them confidence heading into this final four clash.
Australia barely celebrated the win, partly out of respect for Scola and partly because the job isn’t done. Reaching the semi-final is what they expected.
Patty Mills had a few words in the post-game caucus, which many swore, but it basically boiled down to “this is where we want to be, this is where we should be, now let’s go.”
