The 2021/22 Edo Cricket League season ended in thrilling fashion this weekend, with the Edo State U-17 team retaining the title won last year. They beat Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, by 62 points.

Speaking at the final, Nigerian Cricekt Federation Chairman Uyi Akptata who is the chairman of the Edo State Cricket Association said the two teams that played in the final well illustrated.

“It is the pinnacle of cricket development in the state and we are happy that it has justified all the investment everyone has put in,” he added.

The U-17 team led the eight-team league, which started in December 2021 and ended with a two-day Super-Four competition held on Saturday and yesterday.

University Cricket Club Ambrose Alli edged Dolphins Cricket Club by six wickets on the opening day of the event, while No Limit Cricket Club fell nine wickets to the U-17s to stage the final yesterday.

The winning team’s coach, Theophilus Ibodeme, said that although they were tipped to win, the huge task of getting the best out of the youth team placed a big responsibility on his shoulders, saying that he is obliged to always watch them because of their age. .

“I’m very grateful to God for this honor and also commend the boys for being disciplined to keep the pace when they took the lead in the first run,” he said.

Ibodeme said the victory set the tone for a number of players who will feature in the PwC National Under-17 Championship South-South squad starting at the MKO Abiola National Stadium in Abuja from Tuesday 15 February 2022.
